The World’s Borough: Cannabis Culture, Film & Music in Queens

Queens Cannabis Dispensary in Ozone Park

Flor de Fred is a family-owned licensed cannabis dispensary focused on community education and local wellness.

We are surrounded by history in Ozone Park, and we want everyone to learn what makes The World’s Borough unique.

We’re going to explore Queens through places, movies and music while connecting those stories to the cannabis we have in stock at Flor de Fred.

When you know the story behind a place, movie, artist or brand, your next session becomes even more interesting.

Landing in Queens: The Gateway to NYC

No matter who you are or where you’re coming from, when you arrive in New York City, you’re landing in Queens.

The New York International Airport, opened in 1948, was known as Idlewild Airport. It was the first commercial airport in the U.S. named after an American president (John Fitzgerald Kennedy) in 1963 and has since become one of the busiest international airports in North America.

Hollywood has also used the airport for movies including Dog Day Afternoon (1975), Coming to America (1988) and Catch Me If You Can (2002).

The TWA Hotel at JFK

The history continues inside the former TWA Flight Center.

In 2019, the TWA Flight Center became the retro-chic, pet-friendly TWA Hotel, a hotel inside JFK with views of Jamaica Bay and the airport runways.

TWA is the only hotel operating within the boundaries of JFK Airport.

Traveling is fun, but the runaround can be hectic. And the last thing you want to think about after landing is, “Is there a dispensary near me?” or “Can I get weed delivered to my hotel?”

That’s where Flor de Fred comes in.

Presidential Pre-Rolls for Your Queens Arrival

With JFK connecting Queens history with the world, it’s only fitting that our first cannabis pairing is with a New York name.

Presidential’s NYC Diesel Moonrock Blunts are small-batch products grown just for New Yorkers rather than being a national release.

If you’re looking for something heavy but smooth, Gorilla Goo is rolled with unbleached hemp paper and a chlorine-free filter.

Just a heads-up: Presidential pre-rolls can be infused with kief, live resin, distillate or diamonds, so some options may be overwhelming for first-time consumers.

Real-Life Mob History in Queens: Goodfellas & The Irishman

Moving deeper into local history, Queens has been the backdrop for some of Hollywood’s most memorable crime dramas.

Goodfellas (1990) and The Irishman (2019) were both directed by Martin Scorsese, who was born in Flushing.

Neir’s Tavern in Woodhaven dates back to 1829 and has been featured in Goodfellas, including scenes connected to the famous Lufthansa heist at JFK Airport.

Scorsese also filmed parts of The Irishman in Ridgewood, including a baptism scene at St. Matthias Church.

OG Strains for OG Films

We’re keeping the gangsta theme going with some OGs from the cannabis world.

Depending on what’s currently in stock, you can explore strains like Tahoe OG, Skywalker OG, Fire OG or Banana OG in different formats.

“OG” stands for Original Gangster, which is very fitting for classic films based on real life mob kings.

Nas & Resorts World Casino in Queens

Queens legend Nas has gone from lyrics to landmarks through his partnership with Resorts World New York City.

In 2026, Nas helped celebrate the arrival of live table games as Resorts World continues its massive expansion, including a future arena, hotel rooms, dining and community greenspace.

The Hyatt Regency is next door to Resorts World, while Flor de Fred is a 15 minute walk down Rockaway Boulevard.

If you are heading to a show, staying nearby or exploring the area, Flor de Fred is ready for you in Ozone Park.

Forest Hills Stadium & the Marley Brothers

Queens music history doesn’t stop with Nas.

In September 2024, five of Bob Marley’s sons reunited for the first time in 20 years during their Legacy Tour at Forest Hills Stadium.

That night, Borough President Donovan Richards proclaimed September 22 as Marley Brothers Day in Queens, commemorating their father’s musical and humanitarian legacy.

Less than two years later, on 4/20/2026, Rohan Marley’s Lion Order cannabis brand launched in New York City.

Lion Order is now available at Flor de Fred.

Rooted in Rastafari culture, cannabis has a long-standing role as a sacred herb, and Lion Order brings that cultural history into New York’s legal cannabis market.

Fun fact: Lion Order’s website also features Afro-Caribbean anime, including the Kai Suna and Rebel Empire series.

Queens Culture, Cannabis & What’s Next

Queens is one county made up of smaller worlds. Once you land at JFK, you can feel the energy of different cultures, neighborhoods and generations coming together.

Movies, music, food, sports, history and people continue creating the next chapter of New York’s most diverse borough.

Flor de Fred is proud to be part of that small world and we will continue telling its story.
