Flor de Fred is thrilled to celebrate this year’s 4/20 with all our customers. The cannabis holiday gives dispensaries and weed enthusiasts a chance to party throughout the weekend. What is 4/20?
Why do we celebrate 4/20? The holiday’s origins can be traced back more than 50 years to a high school in San Rafael, California. A group of high school students called the “Waldos” came up with 420 as a type of secret code to discuss smoking pot. At 4:20 after school, they would meet up to search for a rumored cannabis crop. Although they never found the crop, the term caught on and was used to describe meeting up to smoke pot. The term caught on when a Waldo joined the Grateful Dead band as a roadie. At Grateful Dead concerts, flyers would be distributed inviting others to meet up at 4:20 for some “4-20ing.”
After an article in the 1990s from the “High Times” popularized 420 lore, events on 4/20 started to pop up around the country. Not only were the events meant to celebrate pot but also to spark advocacy. Groups would smoke pot together in public on 4/20 as a form of “civil disobedience” to push for changes in criminalizing cannabis use. Over the years, many states have adopted laws that permit recreational marijuana usage. We owe these changes in part to the efforts of 420 advocate groups.

Visit Flor de Fred by stopping by 96-05 Liberty Avenue in Ozone Park, New York. We are conveniently located right outside the Rockaway Boulevard subway station. We are open daily with hours on Sunday through Thursday from 11 am to 9 pm and Friday through Saturday from 10 am to 10 pm.
